Who was the first curly salon in New Haven? In Connecticut?
Several places call themselves the first, but Jo Bruno Hair is the very first name in Connecticut specializing in the Devachan curly hair technique. Jo began her business slowly, first by visiting her clients at their homes, then by renting space at other salons (i.e. "Jo Bruno Hair at So-and-So Salon"), then finally in her own space in March 2006.
Jo Bruno Hair is the first; it's a provable fact.

How did Jo get involved in the curly hair revolution?
Jo and curly friend Amy met back in their NYC theater days. After visiting the Devachan Salon in downtown Manhattan, Amy brought Jo the Curly Girl book and guided her on the curly cutting technique. Jo began applying these techniques to her curly clients, and the rest is history...(or "herstory"). Eventually, Jo attended the Davachan training school and learned directly from the horse's mouth (as they say in Jo's home state of Texas).

Does Jo Bruno Hair have many straight-haired clients?
We sure do! It’s true that most of our clientele are “curly girls”--about two-thirds, in fact--but the rest are straight-haired.

Do you really cut curly hair dry?
Yep! The Deva Cutting Technique is a revolutionary method for cutting curly hair. This method removes the need for using any cutting tool other than a scissor. The hair is cut dry, in its natural form, curl by curl. This unique innovation allows the stylist to sculpt each client's hair, according to their individual curl and style.

Do I have to use Deva products to achieve the same look I have when I leave the salon?
No. You can use any products you like. Of course, we recommend non-sulfate cleansers and water soluble gels. Whether they’re Deva products or not is up to you. However, we get great results with Deva products, and our clients swear by them.
FYI: Jo is developing her own line of products, which should be available by the end of the year!

Do I have to do the Devachan curly technique of washing/drying/applying products to achieve the same look I have when I leave the salon?
Yes. In this case, we advise that you use the techniques we show you, which we learned from Lorraine Massey herself (Devachan Diva).

The Deva products are so expensive! Where can I get them for less?
Contrary to some other misinformation out there, Jo Bruno Hair competes for the lowest Deva product prices in the Northeast or online.

What is the “Pintura” technique of highlighting?
"Pintura" is a Devachan-patented, award-winning hair painting technique, both unique and innovative, which was designed to replace conventional highlighting. This method captures and defines the movement and dynamism of each curl, allowing the colorist the freedom to trust their own artistic eye, and create the perfect harmony and balance between tone and shape, light and shadow.
